Although Colima (pop. 180,000+) is the diminutive capital of this agricultural state, it offers much more
in the way of local art, culture, and outdoor activities. The name "Colima" is from the Nahuatl "Colliman" (coli: ancestors
or gods, and maitl: domain of). The whole Valley of Colima is cloaked in the shadows of the resident twin mountains;
the snowcapped 14,220 ft. Nevado de Colima, above his fiery, active younger brother, the 13,087 ft. Volcan de Fuego. Fuego
has erupted more than a dozen times since the conquest.
Located only 2+ hours away from the coastal fishing village of La Manzanilla, the city of Colima is a cultural
treat with it's flowery zocalo's and surrounding colonial villages. Situated at 1,400 ft. above sea level, it offers the traveler
a different collection of plants, flowers, and terrain. A highly recommended side trip while exploring the highs and lows of Mexico's
Costa Alegre (Happy Coast)!
